Glucosamine is extremely safe to people of all ages. No significant side-effects have been reported in any
studies. However, high dosages may cause minor gastric problems, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion and
heartburn in some susceptible people. It should therefore be taken with meals to help avoid these problems.
Glucosamine is produced from Chitin, which is derived from crustacean, and may not be suitable for those
with severe shellfish allergies. Pregnant women should not take Glucosamine, as there is insufficient study
to determine the effect on a child or a developing foetus.

A few case reports and animal studies have raised concerns that Glucosamine might be harmful for
individuals with diabetes. It may raise blood sugar levels and also increase long-term diabetes side-effects
such as cataracts. Blood sugar levels should therefore be checked regularly. A recent case report showed
that an elderly patient had an elevated INR (international normalized ratio) after concomitant use of Warfarin
and a glucosamine & chondroitin product. It is therefore important to contact a GP if you are taking this
combination.

If you are taking any medication we always advise to check with your GP before hand.
